19 Nov 2002 : NO SWEAT PARENTING PART 2

On Tuesday evening 19 November, Pio Terei and John Cowan are coming to Ilminster Intermediate to present another free two hour workshop on parenting.
It's a follow-up to the first night run in August, but you don't need to have been to that one to come to this night.
The presentation is informal, interactive and fun event for parents of all ages. Couples, single parents, step-parents, matua whangai, nannies and koro's will be entertained and inspired by the presentation that uses humour, stories, audience participation and visual aids to communicate some new and not-so-new ways of being great parents for our kids.
No Sweat Parenting is relevant to Maori and Pacific whanau especially, but anyone is welcome and a small koha is requested to offset expenses.
The presentation is put together by Tiaki Tamariki Maia (Parenting With Confidence) a national organisation that aims to inspire and equip parents to develop stronger, healthier families that are full of fun, learning and love.
Comments from those who have been involved in these events include: "A very positive and affirming approach to parenting"; "Every parent needs to do this at least once!"; "It gives you more options, tools and confidence to raise your children from the smallest situation to the most dramatic"; "Highly recommend it!."
If you want to know more about No Sweat Parenting call Jim on 8674507 or 8630065 - alternatively just come along on the 19th!

15 Nov 2002 : KAPAI KAITI AWARDED CB FUNDING
Kapai Kaiti have been granted funding from Te Puni Koiri - the Ministry of Maori Development - to develop a democratic process of community representation. As a charitable trust we want to ensure we represent the community fairly and include a diverse range of people in the planning and actitivies that Kapai Kaiti is involved with. We could also look at representation to decision-makers such as the Gisborne District Council and Tairawhiti Development Taskforce. We need community-level input into what process will work best for us. So have a think and come along to the next Kapai Kaiti community forum.

08 Nov 2002 : KAITI BOOT-SALE

Kapai Kaiti have started a weekly boot sale and flea market based at Waikirikiri Reserve carpark. Running from 10am to 12pm on Sundays this activity is designed to help raise funds for the Kaiti Community Centre. Over $12,000 has been raised for the Centre so far and the flea market is another way of getting the whole community to support the establishment of this valuable resource for Kaiti. We set the start time a bit later than other flea markets in the district so that we don't disturb the neighbours and it allows people to pop along mid-morning to support the fundraising effort. Stalls are $5 each and we hope the event will become as popular as the Alfred Cox flea markets on Saturday mornings in town. The boot sale is not just about fundraising, it's also about community building and providing another chance to meet our neighbours and catch up with friends.

10 Aug 2002: KAITI ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
A meeting for people interested in doing oral history interviews with Kaiti residents (or ex-residents) was held on 25 July. The group came up with a list of possible topics that would be good to collect people's memories and korero about:
- Kaiti Freezing Works
- Kaiti Memorial Hall
- Port & Harbour Development
- Kaiti School
- Waikirikiri Kindergarten
- Moving to Kaiti from the Coast
- Landmarks: bridges, DB Hotel, Kaiti Mall
- Sports Clubs: Kaiti Cricket Club, Indoor Bowls, etc.
- Particular homes/houses of note
- Families that have lived here for a number of generations

If you are able to talk to someone about any of these subjects, then please contact
Manu Caddie on 8686889 (leave a message if no one is home).
We'd also love to use old photos of Kaiti in the book if your family has any that may be suitable to publish.

28 June 2002: KEEPING KAITI CLEAN
At the June meeting of KaPai Kaiti, local residents spent most of the evening discussing how to reduce the amount of litter and rubbish around Kaiti.
There seems to be an on-going problem with broken bottles on footpaths, carparks, roads and playing fields. It was suggested that maybe wholesalers could stop selling glass bottles.
Peter Burrows from the Council gave a presentation on litter and the Councils role. You can ring Environmental Health on 8672049 if you have an issue with rubbish gathering regularly in the same public place or other litter issues.
It was decided that a 'Kaiti Monday Madness' be held on 29 July promoting picking up rubbish and keeping Kaiti clean. It is to involve primary schools, early childhood education centres, kohanga reo and Keep Gisborne Beautiful. A committee was established to coordinate the event including Juliette Creswell-Wells, Ella Te Kani, Deanna Harrison, Christine Taare.
Another suggestion was an award being established to encourage pride in Kaiti and acknowledge those wonderful people who make an effort to pick up other people's litter. KaPai Kaiti liked this idea and plan to make it a special feature of our community - so if you know someone who deserves recognition for their commitment to keeping Kaiti clean, then please contact
KaPai Kaiti.

29 June 2002: NATIVE TREE PLANING AT WAIKIRIKIRI
On Saturday 22 June a group of locals gathered at Waikirikiri Park and planted a range of native trees. The trees were provided by Womens Native Forest Action Group through a GDC grant to plant on Council managed reserves. So thanks to both groups for the koha to Kaiti.
This is an experiment to see if the trees survive and then more may be planted. In the past a lot of trees planted on the Park have been taken for people's own gardens. However this time, if Kaiti residents want some trees for their home they can phone 8687722 and we will arrange for a selection of trees to be dropped off. So please look out for the rakau - whanau are encouraged to adopt one of them and KaPai Kaiti will arrange for a label to be made that has the whanau name on it.

28 June 2002: COMMUNITY CENTRE UPDATE:

A KaPai Kaiti sub-committee met on the 24th June to look specifically at the Kaiti Community Centre and how best to proceed. The group decided to get as much feedback as possible from the different sports clubs and community groups that may be interested in using a Community Centre and also to do some research on other centres around the country to see what worked for them. So, if you are interested in this kaupapa, please contact Walton Walker (walton@ora.org.nz) at home on 867 3407.

06 June 2002: TE HAU PARONGO:

The day also included a dinner with a debate and guest speakers. Wai and Hinemoa Makiri attended the dinner on behalf of Kapai Kaiti, and enjoyed themselves listening to the debate. The topic was "It's better to be a follower than a leader" and local High School students Lewis Whaitiri and Rebecca Porou who were the guest speakers whose topic was "What I know about Maori development and what I think should happen".
